Paris, December 6, 2019. The
Alliance for the Preservation of Forests has signed an open letter calling on
the Brazilian government to maintain the Amazon Soy Moratorium (ASM).
Published on Tuesday, December 3 in The Guardian, this letter
gathers more than 80 companies and investors signatories, and expresses our
concern since the Brazilian association of soy producers, Aprosoja, has
launched a campaign to end the Amazon soy moratorium. This moratorium is a
2006 agreement banning the cultivation of new lands for soy production.
The Alliance for the Preservation of Forests is convinced of the interest of the Amazon Soy Moratorium, necessary for the safeguarding of the largest tropical forest of the world but also for the indigenous peoples and the animal species that live there. Today, there are enough existing agricultural lands in the Amazon for soy production to keep on growing, with no need to clear new plots.
